Breathtaking Hidden Gem Lakes in Myanmar You’ve Got to See

Most visitors missed out on lakes when visiting Myanmar because it seems like a boring activity on the itinerary. In fact, lakes are some of the most astonishing views of the country.
Each lake in Myanmar has unique scenery as well as a historic background, and some can even take your breath away. Visit Myanmar like the locals, study the lifestyles, and be part of their daily life. By visiting the lakes, you can get interesting insights into the local life.
1. Twin Taung Lake
Beautiful hills surround the Twin Taung lake, which exists in an extinct volcanic crater, creating the scenery unimaginable. While you enjoy mother nature’s creations, don’t forget to take pictures. Not only this lake is beautiful, but it is also one of the rare lakes in the world. A powerful rare provitamin used in medicines called Spirulina is produced in this lake, and it is on the verge of extinction. Twin Taung Lake is six miles away from Budalin Township near Chindwin River in the Monywa District of Sagaing. Although it takes a few hours drive to get to the area, it is worth the travel.
2. Taungtaman Lake
Taungtaman Lake seems like it is trapped in the time of the olden days in Myanmar. Where the local fishermen use traditional fishing methods and the world’s longest teak bridge ‘U Bein’ make it seem like technological innovations have yet to exist. It is located in Amarapura which is 7 miles (11 km) of Mandalay, and you can get to the lake by Hotel/Tour provided services or simply get a taxi to get to the area. Watching a mesmerizing sunset while you cruise on a boat will make you awe at the beauty of this lake and it will be an experience you won’t be able to forget.
3. Indawgyi Lake
An ideal place for nature lovers and for someone who prefers complete silence to find inner peace. Wildlife Sanctuary protected diverse flora and fauna surrounds a UNESCO Biospheres Reserve, Indawgyi lake, Kachin State. There exists a floating pagoda named ‘Shwe Myitzu Pagoda’ in the middle of the lake creating a phenomenal panoramic view. You can explore the lake by a motor-powered boat and kayak, or if you rather explore by land, you can rent bicycles or motorbikes. Indawgyi Lake is located in Lon Ton Village of Mohnyin, and there are three alternative ways to get to the lake. First, you need to go to Hopin district, and from there you can travel by shared pick-up truck (Approx.4,000-5,000 ks; 2-3 hours), by private taxi (approx. 80,000 ks; 1.5-2 hours), or by motorbike (approx. 15,000 ks; 1.5-2 hours).
4. Rih Lake
Distinctive heart-shaped lake, Rih situated between the Chin and Indian mountain ranges. The closed town to get to Rih lake is Rihkhawdar and it takes approximately 4 hours from Chin Capital, Hakha. There are buses from Kalaymyo to Rihkhawdar as well, but the journey is not comfortable and it takes about nine hours. From Rihkhawdar, the visitors can walk up a hill to reach mesmerizing Rih Lake. Trekking around this region is a must if you are visiting Chin state. Not only the lake itself is mesmerizing, but emerald rice paddies and the mountain views are fantastic from above. 5. Ywangan Blue Lagoon
The pristine deep blue water will make you gasp at the sight of Ywangan Blue Lagoon. You can enjoy the tranquility and the complete silence regardless of the surrounding forests. It is an eerie experience for some people, but for those who need a quiet place, a sacred Ywangan Blue Lagoon should be on the bucket list. There is also a waterfall nearby and the harmonious nature sounds will complete the inner zen mood. While you are in the area, you can also take part in a Coffee tour and have a taste of high-quality coffee products. Ywangan Blue Lagoon is about a 90-minute drive from Nyaungshwe (known for Inle Lake), Shan State. If you prefer public transport, there are minibusses that run from Shwenyaung junction (which is 30 mins north of Nyaungshwe) to Ywangan and the journey takes about 3 hours.
